CHAPTER SIX

Dominick and Trevor perched on the desk, savoring their sandwiches, their gazes fixed on the horde of zombies pressed against the office window.

In the midst of their dire circumstances, they lapsed into silence, allowing the gravity of their situation to settle upon them. Eventually, as Trevor polished off his meal, he shattered the tense quiet.

"Well, at least we're not going to starve to death," Trevor remarked.

Dominick shook his head, addressing Trevor's defeatist attitude. "You see, this is your biggest problem. You give up too easily."

Trevor's curiosity piqued. "You have an idea?"

Dominick nodded, but instead of elaborating, he resumed eating his sandwich, leaving Trevor baffled by his sudden silence.

"Well? What is it?" Trevor pressed, but Dominick merely raised a finger, signaling for silence as he savored the last bites of his meal. A mischievous grin played on his lips, further fueling Trevor's frustration.

Finally, with his sandwich consumed, Dominick sprang to his feet. "OK, come here, I got something to show you."

Trevor trailed Dominick to the window, where they both stretched on tiptoes to peer over the mass of zombies outside. Dominick gestured toward a wall to their right, prompting Trevor to glance over and shake his head in confusion.

"OK, what in the world am I looking at?" Trevor asked.

"The office near the center. Look out the window," Dominick instructed.

Trevor followed his gaze, eventually spotting the object of Dominick's focus. Outside the building, the window washer's rig sat idle.

"You're out of your damn mind," Trevor remarked incredulously.

"Maybe, but it's an idea that's going to work," Dominick replied confidently.

"Even if we could get to it, we'd have to get through the windows, which isn't that easy," Trevor pointed out.

"You still have your screwdrivers, right?" Dominick asked.

"Yeah?" Trevor confirmed.

"Punch some holes through it, then start hammering away with the office chair. We should be able to get through," Dominick suggested.

"Yeah, maybe, but how in the hell are we getting there? And why aren't we going for the stairs if we can get out of here so easily?" Trevor questioned, voicing his doubts.

Dominick smirked before striding over to the desk and lifting the receiver of the phone. With purpose, he punched in a sequence of digits, then set the phone to speaker mode. After a few rings, a voice answered.

"Boys, is that you?" Conrad's voice sounded with relief.

"Live and in the flesh," Dominick replied.

"Oh thank god. We were getting worried," Ashlyn chimed in.

"When have we ever let you down, Ashlyn?" Dominick teased.

"Where are you?" Sasha's voice held concern.

"Still on thirty-two. We got into a bit of a pickle," Dominick explained.

"Yeah, we got the food, but we're trapped," Trevor added.

"Oh my god," Ashlyn gasped.

"I don't know how much help we're going to be. Those things are all over the stairwell," Sasha admitted.

"I'm sure you boys already know, but Dustin didn't make it," Conrad interjected.

"Yeah, we saw him go down the stairwell," Trevor confirmed.

"And if we're going to avoid his fate, we're going to need your help," Dominick stated gravely.

"I told you, Dominick, the stairwell is filled with those things.
